So believe it or not, your best bet is to install the Pentair Salt System. With proper maintenance this system works the best. Here are some tips:
The cell will not work in cold water. You will get a red salt level light in the winter months. No cell works in cold water. When the water heats up the cell will give you an accurate salt level reading. The cell is not broken or defective. It just doesn't produce in cold water, I'm talking below 65 degrees.
Inside the cell you will see a sensor that controls when the cell is alerted that it is dirty and needs to be cleaned. When the clean cell light is flashing on the unit no salt will be produced. After cleaning the cell sometimes this sensor will not clear. You will have re-clean it. By the second or third cleaning the sensor should be reset. Also the power to the unit must be off or the unit will not reset. Unplug the unit from the power center or turn off the breaker.
You will get an inaccurate salt level reading if the cell is dirty. Your cell can be dirty even when the light isn't flashing.
I service about six pools with this system and only one has a faulty sensor that is always flashing that the cell is dirty. I can get it to turn off for a month by cleaning the cell, but I think the cell needs to be replaced soon (4 years old).
You will get 5 years from your cell depending on the size of the pool (larger pools 30,000+ less life) and how hot the water gets in the Summer (the hotter the water the more the cell is working to produce chlorine).

This video shows you the correct way to clean a Pentair Intellichlor salt cell without damaging the unit. ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES AND USE SAFETY GLASSES OR GOGGLES (I USE AO SAFETY SUNGLASSES). A GAS MASK IS ALSO HELPFUL WHEN DEALING WITH ACID. DO NOT BREATHE FUMES DIRECTLY.
a note on cleaning: please make sure you do not add too much acid (very rapid bubbling and foaming is an indicator that the acid to water mix is too high) as this will ruin the Platinum coated plates ruining the cell. Just add a little acid, and add more to get that gentle bubbling effect. It will take longer to clean the cell but is much better for the unit. If you find the cell is not being cleaned, add a bit more acid. You don't want to be out $500+ for a new one.
PH in a Salt Pool: The PH in a salt pool will always be high (8.2 or higher) due to the salt unit. NEVER add more than 1/2 gallon of acid to the pool. Your goal is not to have a 7.2-7.4 PH, but to keep it low. NEVER add acid more than every 5 days. Always run pool when you add acid for 3 hours. If you run the PH below 7.0 for an extended period the plaster will get black stains, and the metal in the equipment will rust out. I tend to add 1/4 to 1/2 gal of acid every week and use the PhosFree in the video to keep the white blow back (skin flake like) down (actually a type of Acid that the Salt Cell produces when it reverses). Your goal is to keep the PH within 7.8-8.0 in a Salt Pool.
REMEMBER: The Salt Cell lifespan is 5 years so don't let anyone talk you into a salt water system to save money on Chlorine Tablets. The cost of a new cell is $500+ so it's a wash. And don't be afraid to add a gallon of liquid chlorine or a bag of shock to your pool if the chlorine level drops to zero (heavy use or the salt unit failing to produce). Since the pool has no conditioner the Chlorine will dissipate within 24-48 hours, returning your pool to a Salt Water pool (which basically produces a cleaner, more natural Chlorine sanitizer).
